Labor Party: Up to 100,000 Workers to Rally on May Day

28 April 2023 11:52 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The president of the Labor Party Said Iqbal in a written statement on Thursday estimated that there will be up to 100,000 participants nationwide in the upcoming commemoration of International Labor Day on May 1, or May Day. They will focus the rally in front of the State Palace and Constitutional Court headquarters.

“As for Jakarta, workers will attend the May Day Fiesta after rallying at the Palace and Constitutional Court (MK),” Said Iqbal wrote in a statement on April 27.

He elaborated that the Labor Party will bring to light six demands that the organization believes need urgent attention as it greatly affects the livelihood of many.

The demands include: demanding the Job Creation omnibus law to be revoked; dropping the regulation of a 4 percent parliamentary threshold; calling for the urgent passing of the domestic workers' Bill; rejecting the Bill on Healthcare; calling for agrarian and food sovereignty reform; and calling for the public to elect a pro-labor and workers class presidential candidate in the 2024 election.

Briefly looking into the details of their demands, the Labor Party has voiced a strong stand against the Job Creation Act as they deem the legal product to perpetuate cheap labor, modern slavery through lifelong outsourcing, never-ending circle of working as a temporary contract worker, and the reduced basic worker's rights.

Said Iqbal, in past instances, has voiced out problems that hurdle the lives of farmers, healthcare workers, and the management of the country’s national health insurance that will be overseen by the Health Ministry instead of experts in the IDI national doctors’ Association.
