TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani on Tuesday says the upcoming general election (Pemilu) will be held as planned after the House passed the regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) of Law No.1/2022. She also hopes this would help the country realize a festive and safe democratic practice of electing a leader.
“The election God willing will be held as scheduled on February 14, 2024,” said the Speaker at the Parliamentary Complex on April 4.
The passing of the General Election Perpu (Perpu Pemilu) is a follow-up on the establishment of four new autonomous regions of Papua.
Before its ratification, the DPR's Government Commission chairperson, Ahmad Doli Kurnia, explained several changes to the norms in the General Elections Perpu.
Among the wide array of changes are the formation of election organizers in the new autonomous region provinces; institutional strengthening of holding general elections; the arrangement of electoral districts and allocation of seats for members of DPR, Provincial DPRD; schedule for the general election campaign for members of DPR, DPRD, and presidential and vice-presidential election campaigns; organizing general elections in the Capital City of Nusantara in 2024; as well as adjustments to electoral districts and adjustments to the number of seats for Provincial DPRD members as an implication of population growth.
In representing the government, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian elaborated that the Pemilu Perpu is the House and government’s commitment to providing legal certainty for the implementation of the 2024 general election stages.
