Germany Ambassador to Indonesia Ina Lepel Visits Batam City

TEMPO.CO, Batam - The German Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Ina Lepel, on Wednesday met with the City of Batam’s concession agency (BP Batam) chief Muhammad Rudi. The two talked about the city’s economy and investment opportunities. 

One of the topics discussed in the meeting was the development of the special economic zone (KEK) and the progress of German corporations located in the city that is within the Riau Islands. 

Ina Lepel’s entourage included the Main Secretary for Economics Maximillian Mauer, Deputy Executive Director of the German-Indonesia Chamber of Industry and Commerce Martin Kohoutek, and Staff for Economic Affairs Maharini Ayuanindita. 

“We arrived in Jakarta and met with BP Batam who is also the Mayor of Batam as we landed,” said Lepel. “We heard that Batam is astonishing, interesting, and progressed in its business and economy.”

Head of BP Batam Muhammad Rudi conveyed the latest economic conditions growth indicated by the policies produced during the pandemic and the spaces provided for upstream and downstream economic activities to continue rolling.

Rudi said Batam's economy is now in a stable condition and continues to experience a significant increase. According to the latest Batam Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data, Batam's economic growth reached 4.75 percent in 2021, which is extraordinary even in the midst of a pandemic and exceeded the national growth rate of 3.69 percent.

Up until 2022, Batam's economy was projected to grow with an average of 5.15 percent - 5.66 percent, while the Riau Islands at 5.03 percent, and 5.31 percent nationally.

Following this information, the Main Secretary for Economic Affairs Maximillian Mauer said that the embassy would encourage German companies to invest in Batam.
