TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that the number of rail passengers increased significantly during the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year holidays compared to the previous year.
“We recorded a substantial hike from last year’s Nataru at 73 percent. The number of rail passengers saw the highest increase of 168 percent, the air passenger number was relatively stagnant, the ferry transport passenger recorded a hike, and also sea transport passenger although it was not high,” said Budi Karya during a meeting on the evaluation of Nataru with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, February 15, 2023.
He assessed that one of the reasons was the shift in passengers using air transport to trains. However, the number of air passengers remained the highest at 3.88 million, followed by rail passengers at 2.34 million.
“We found that at that time, the most widely used transportation was air transport at 31 percent, roads at 23 percent, railroads and ferries transport at 19 percent, and sea transport at 8 percent.
From the data presented by the Transportation Ministry, the total number of transport passengers during the 2022/2023 year-end holiday reached 12.63 million, up by 73.33 percent. The data was calculated from December 18, 2022, until January 4, 2023.
