TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Anak Krakatau erupted on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 00:13 local time. The eruption column was observed to be 750 meters high above the peak or about 907 meters above sea level. The observed ash column located on the northeast was grey-colored with medium to thick intensity.
The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) for Lebak Regency, Banten, requested that the people living in the coastal area be vigilant and careful after the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
"We have conveyed to the people who live around the south coast to be alerted of the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau," said the Head of the Emergency and Logistics Section of the BPBD for Lebak Regency, Agust Riza Faizal, as quoted from Antara, Thursday, January 5.
Mount Anak Krakatau is located in the northern part of the Sunda Strait, while the coast of Lebak Regency is in the southern part of the Sunda Strait. Therefore, the BPBD appealed to the people living on the southern coast to increase their awareness of the eruption to avoid any accidents at the volcano in the northern Sunda Strait.
Despite there had been no early warning from the Geology Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources regarding the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, it would still be wise for residents to remain vigilant to reduce the risk of disaster, said Agust Riza Faizal.
"We ask people living near the coast to obey the officers in the field for their safety," he said.
Previously, Mount Anak Krakatau also erupted twice on Wednesday, January 4, at 15:00. The volcanic ash was emitted to 3,000 meters from the top of the peak. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 65 millimeters and a duration of 1 minute 37 seconds.
"We request the public not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau or carry out activities within a five-kilometer radius of the active crater," he said.
