TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that rich people wearing ties will be subject to a higher fare of KRL or Commuter Line. He conveyed this at the 2022 Year-end Press Conference and 2023 Activity Outlook.
The statement dated back to when Tempo asked about the plan to increase the train fare next year. Budi Karya then replied that the fare will not be increased but there will be a special fare for rich people.
“The fare is not increased in 2023, inshallah, but those wearing a tie have to pay a higher fee,” he said at the Transportation Ministry Office, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, December 27, 2022.
Previously, the ministry reportedly planned to increase the train ticket fare to Rp5,000 for the first 25-kilometer trip and the fare for each additional 10 kilometers of a trip will remain at Rp1,000.
The ministry’s spokesperson Adita Irawati on Wednesday, December 28, also confirmed that there will not be an increase in the KRL Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta area) ticket in the near future. However, the ministry is reviewing changes to the tariff scheme given that the ticket fares are still being subsidized by the state through the Public Service Obligation (PSO).
“Therefore, to ensure that the subsidies are received by people who need them, the Directorate General of Railways is conducting a study on the PSO subsidy scheme,” Adita said in a statement.
