TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government decided to enforce a car-free night policy along Jalan Sudirman - Thamrin, Central Jakarta during the 2023 New Year's Eve celebrations in a bid to prevent traffic congestion.
“We are implementing a car-free night from 20:00 to 02:00 WIB (Jakarta time),” said Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo at the City Hall, Tuesday, December 20, 2022.
To anticipate people riding private vehicles to celebrate the new year in the central city, the agency planned to open 40 parking pockets near the main road. However, he stopped short of detailing the places.
The New Year's Eve celebration in Central Jakarta will be centered on Thamrin 10, and an entertainment stage will be built along that strategic road.
On the other hand, Syafrin appealed to people to use public transportation to reach the area. “The [parking] capacity is quite capable, but we really hope that people who will visit the Sudirman-Thamrin area to celebrate the new year use public transportation services,” he emphasized.
TransJakarta bus Line 1 which connects Blok M and Kota route will remain operable passing Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin.
As for security, the agency coordinated with Jakarta Metro Police and Jakarta Military Command (Kodam Jaya). The city police will deploy 8,000 personnel to escort and secure the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year celebrations in Jakarta and its surroundings.
“More than 8,000 police personnel [will stand guard] throughout the Jakarta area,” said Jakarta Police’s Head of Public Relations Sr. Comr. Endra Zulpan.
Zulpan said the security measures for this year’s Christmas and 2023 New Year celebrations will be slightly different from the previous year because the government had relaxed the COVID-19 restrictions at entertainment venues and crowd centers in the capital.
