TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Part of the movable bridge at Nusa Penida Harbor collapsed allegedly due to being overloaded on Thursday afternoon, December 15, 2022.
“The incident occurred at the Nusa Penida Harbor yesterday afternoon,” said the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Transportation Ministry through the Nusa Penida Class II Port Administration Unit (UPP) Office in a written statement on Friday, December 16, 2022.
I Ketut Gede Sudarma, head of the UPP Class II Nusa Penida Office, said the incident resulted in 25 passengers on board being thrown into the sea. However, there were, fortunately, no casualties. The ship carrying dozens of passengers, the Semabu Hills Fast Boat, also departed at that time.
According to him, the incident occurred at Banjar Nyuh Harbor at 16:45 local time, Thursday. “The Semabu Hills fast boat that carries passengers of foreign nationals departs from Nusa Penida to Sanur Harbor, Denpasar,” said Sudarma.
UPP Class II Nusa Penida Office thus prepared measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents, such as strengthening the movable bridge and limiting the number of disembarkation and embarkation of passengers via the bridge.
“So that tourists will be more convenient while traveling,” Sudarma added.
He also offered an apology for the incident and asked ship operators, as well as passengers, to comply with existing safety regulations, “and prioritize safety which is not only the responsibility of regulators and ship operators but also passengers as it is a shared responsibility.”
