Alliance of Criminal Code Bill Reform Holds Protest as Govt Passes RKUHP

6 December 2022 18:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Alliance of Criminal Code Reform held again a symbolic action rejecting the ratification of the criminal code bill or RKUHP in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) Building today, December 6, 2022. Dozens of demonstrators arrived at around 14:30 Jakarta time, bringing camping equipment, such as tents, small stoves, and mats.

The equipment is in accordance with the theme of today's rally: 'Berkemah di Depan Rumah Wakil Rakyat karena Demokrasi Darurat' which literally translates to camping in front of the house of people's representatives because of emergency democracy.

Two tents and a mat were set up in front of the Parliament building. They cooked noodles and conducted discussions about problematic articles in the bill. Two chairs and a table are placed in the middle of the tent.

Each representative of civil society groups took the chair one by one, talking about the impact of the vague articles.

On Monday, the alliance consisting of 41 civil organizations held a symbolic action against the ratification of the RKUHP in front of the Parliament building. Unlike today’s rally agenda, they laid flowers and burned the RKUHP book.

Despite people’s objections, the government and DPR officially ratified the criminal code bill or RKUHP at today's plenary meeting. The final draft version of November 30, 2022, consists of 624 articles and 37 chapters. The new law will take effect for the next 3 years.
