Indonesia's New Capital Predicted to Have 1.9mn Population by 2045

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Development Planning Ministry /National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) predicted the new capital city of Nusantara will have a population of 1.7 million to 1.9 million by 2045. The figure is estimated based on the area size of around 256,142 hectares and sea area of approximately 68,189 hectares.
"According to an Attachment in Law No. 3/2022 on the State Capital (IKN), the population of IKN by 2045 is mandated to be around 1.7 to 1.9 million with urban area density reaching around 100 people per hectare," read a statement issued by the ministry in Jakarta, Friday 25 November.
The estimated population in IKN is in accordance with the calculation of the land's occupation capacity and the environment.
By 2024, 257,675 people are projected to inhabit the capital following the first stage of relocation. The new capital's first dwellers will comprise state civil apparatus, officials from the Ministry of Defense and THI, members/staff of the National Police, BIN, BSSN, and Bakamla, as well as employees of institutions independent state/public body and construction workers.
The construction work for the Nusantara Capital City is divided into five stages starting in 2022. The fifth phase is expected to be completed by 2045.
