TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the best ways to unwind after a week of hectic routine in a metropolitan is to go hiking for a quick escape to enjoy nature. Jakarta dwellers are lucky as the city is surrounded by a number of nearby mountains perfect for a weekend away from the big city's hustle and bustle. Here are Tempo's top five picks.
1. Batu Jonggol
Despite its modest height of just 874 meters above sea level, Mount Batu Jonggol has its own challenges due to its steep and uphill hiking trail. Located in Sukaharja Village, Bogor Regency, the cute little mountain is less than 3-hours ride from Central Jakarta.
2. Pangrango
A little further south, we'll find Mount Pangrango is adjacent to Mount Gede, allowing hikers to hop from one to the next. Towering 3,019 meters above sea level, Mount Pangrango is part of Bogor Regency's Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park. Around 100 meters from the peak is the Mandalawangi, a five hectare valley with beautiful Edelweiss patches.
3. Mount Salak
As one of West Java's most famous mountains, Salak has been a famous hiking destination for decades. Peaking 2,211 meters above sea level, Salak is a type A stratovolcano, giving it a mystical view of billowing smoke, drying trees, and the majestic Kawah Ratu. It takes less than two hours to drive there from Bogor City.
4. Munara
Mount Munara is located on the west side of Bogor Regency, just two hours from Central Jakarta via toll road. The cute "mini" mountain is only just 367 meters above sea level, making it perfect for beginners as it takes only 1 to 1.5 hours to reach its peak and be mesmerized by the view of the beauty of green rice fields, residential areas, and surrounding cliffs.
5. Kencana
Mount Kencana is located in Cisarua, Bogor Regency, standing 1803 meters above sea level. One of its main attraction points is the incline in the form of stairs with a slope of 45 degrees. Almost 100 meters in length, the Sambalado incline is truly a must-try for nature-loving Jakartans.
