TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) prosecutors demanded the death penalty for Hanson International (IDX: MYRX) president director Benny Tjokrosaputro, the defendant in the PT Asabri embezzlement and money laundering case that had incurred a state loss of Rp22.78 trillion. Prosecutors also demanded that Benny pay a fine of Rp5.73 trillion.
The AGO's public prosecutor Agung Wagiyo said at the Jakarta Corruption Court today, October 26, that Benny was proven guilty of committing corruption and money laundering.
The prosecutor said that there are three things incriminating Benny Tjokro's defense. The first one, he said, is that the defendant has shown no remorse over his "extraordinary crime".
Secondly, Benny's crime is considered to have lowered the level of trust/confidence in insurance and capital markets investment. Third, Benny Tjokro is already sentenced to life for the investment fund management graft at PT Asuransi Jiwasraya Persero, which caused a state loss of Rp16.87 trillion, as ruled by the Supreme Court.
PT. Asabri, a state-owned insurance and pension fund management company, got its funds from the THT (Old Age Savings) program and the AIP (Pension Contribution Accumulation) program. The company collected the funds from the premium payments by military, the police and Defense Ministry employees, deducted from their salaries.
However, PT Asabri used the fund to place investments in second and third tier shares, a.k.a. stocks with higher risks. These stocks include LCGP (Eureka Prima Jakarta), MYRX (Hanson International), and SUGI (Sugih Energy).
