Religious Ministry's Regulation on Sexual Crimes Proves Govt' Commitment

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An expert at the Presidential Staff office Rumadi Akhmad, asserted the importance of the latest regulation issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs overseeing the handling and prevention of sexual crimes in academic environments.
Rumadi underlined that Minister of Religious Affairs Regulation No.73/2022 is crucial to prevent such sexual crimes from happening at educational institutions that are also overseen by the Religious Affairs Ministry.
"For example, a while ago when the public was shocked by an incident at a religious educational institution in Bandung and Jombang," Rumadi stated in a written statement on Friday, October 21, 2022, as quoted by Antaranews.
Rumadi asserted that the issuance of the new regulation is proof of the government's intention to prevent and legally follow up on sexual crimes and help the recovery of the victims. Rumadi also mentioned that the new regulation is a direct implementation of Law No.12/2022 on sexual crimes (TPKS).
Rumadi added that Another aspect of the implementation of the TPKS law is to establish a complaint centers for victims to file reports. "Such facilities are needed to maximize the protection of sexual crime victims," said Rumadi.
The Religious Affairs Ministry's regulation was issued on October 5, 2022, and provides a clear definition of acts of sexual crimes, which include verbal discrimination and harassment against a person's physical appearance, physical condition, gender identity, sexually-related jokes, and cat calling.
