TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Students of the National Association of University Student Executive Bodies (BEM SI) are set to stage a mass protest in front of the President’s Merdeka Palace against the rise of subsidized fuel prices on Thursday.
They announced this on September 14 on its Instagram page, “Following up on the ultimatum on September 8, we are again disappointed by the government's failure to fulfill our demands.”
Among their list of demands, one of them is demanding and urging the government to revoke the decision to increase fuel prices. BEM SI also demands and urges the government to postpone national strategic projects that do not have a direct impact on the community and divert the budget to fuel subsidies.
Prior to today’s protest, BEM SI held a demonstration against the increase in fuel prices on September 8 at the same location. They sent an ultimatum to the government 7x24 hours to return the price of fuel to its original state, otherwise more demonstrations would take to the streets.
The student executive body rally is among many other communities that have voiced their discontent against the government’s non-populist policy.
