TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java Deputy Governor Emil Dardak opined that his province has remained the locomotive of the national economy as it contributed to 14.30 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) and 25.30 percent of Java's gross regional domestic product (GRDP).
“If we look at food commodities alone, we can already record deflation instead of inflation,” said Emil at the 2022 Central and Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting, as quoted from Bank Indonesia's YouTube video on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
He explained that in East Java, commodities contributing to deflation were higher than those contributing to inflation. Commodities contributing to the province’s deflation in August 2022 include shallots at 0.16 percent, cayenne pepper at 0.16 percent, chicken meat at 0.07 percent, and cooking oil at 0.05 percent.
Meanwhile, other sectors that contributed to inflation in the same month were academies or universities at 0.17 percent, elementary schools at 0.15 percent, rice at 0.05 percent, and electricity at 0.02 percent.
The inflation rate in August 2022 in East Java was recorded at 0.09 percent month to month and 5.20 percent year on year. Surabaya reported the highest inflation in the province at 0.26 percent.
The deepest deflation, meanwhile, occurred in Sumenep at 1.13 percent and the lowest inflation was in Kediri at 0.01 percent.
Emil said the East Java government acknowledged that the growth had to be balanced with inflation control efforts. However, he argued that the current conditions reflected how every element and sector of the economy in the region started to recover from the pandemic crisis.
The economic growth of East Java in the second quarter of 2022 also grew 5.75 percent while the national economic growth reached 5.44 percent yoy. This growth rate is the largest compared to other provinces on the Java island, such as Banten with 5.70 percent, West Java with 5.68 percent, Central Java with 5.66 percent, Jakarta with 5.59 percent, and Yogyakarta with 5.20 percent.
