TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan claimed that most of the food prices on Friday, August 26, 2022, had dropped significantly compared to the previous week.
“Except [the prices of] chicken egg and flour that increase slightly,” said Zulkifli at the House of Representatives (DPR) Building, South Jakarta on Tuesday, August 30, 2022.
According to him, the egg price has increased by about six percent. He recalled that when he was sworn in as a minister, the price was already high at Rp32,000 per kilogram. It was then managed to drop to Rp26,000, but now it is rising again to Rp32,000-33,000 per kilogram.
Zulkifli also claimed that the egg price in East Java ranges from Rp28,000 to Rp30,000 per kilogram, in Central Java and Jakarta at Rp30,500 per kilogram, while on the islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Papua, and Maluku at around Rp30,000 per kilogram.
According to Zulkifli, the increase in egg prices occurred due to losses suffered by farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, the egg price plummeted to Rp14,000 per kilogram. Therefore, egg breeders reduced the population of laying hens and focused on producing chicken meats.
The minister was optimistic that egg prices will be stable in the next two weeks. He said the normal egg price is Rp27,000-29,000 per kilogram because the capital reaches Rp24,000. “So if the price returns to Rp17,000 per kilogram as in early 2021, farmers will lose a lot.”
The Jakarta Food Information page reported that the average price of eggs as of Sunday, August 28, 2022, is still around Rp31,100 per kilogram. The Information Center for Strategic Food Prices (PIHPS) also noted that the egg price rose to Rp31,550 per kilogram.
