TEMPO.CO, Sanya, China - More than 80,000 tourists are stuck in Sanya, China's coastal resort city in Hainan Province. The government put the city in lockdown after the local health commission confirmed 801 cases of Covid-19 last week.
Sanya, known as "China's Hawaii", reported 801 cases of Covid-19 between August 1 and 7. Xinhua reported on Monday that, according to the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, 409 of those infections were asymptomatic.
A task force was formed to solve the problems faced by the more than 80,000 tourists stuck in the city, such as refunds. The city has also ordered hotels to offer a 50-percent discount to guests who are unable to leave Sanya.
Thirty-three hotels with more than 6,900 rooms have been designated as isolation wards for close and sub-close contacts of Covid-19 cases, according to Ji Duanrong, secretary general of the Sanya City Government.
On Saturday, Sanya declared 168 areas as "high risk" for Covid-19 and 67 more as "medium risk". The city has also set up a task force to ensure food supplies and basic necessities for residents living under closed management, Ji said.
