TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police's special counterterrorism squad, Densus 88, arrested 17 suspected terrorists. They were arrested in three different provinces, 13 in Aceh, three in North Sumatera, and one in Riau.
Brig. Gen. Ahmad Ramadhan, head of Public Information at the Indonesian Police Public Relations Division, said that 11 people who were arrested in Aceh are affiliated with the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist network, while two others were identified as members the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) network.
"They took shooting training in preparation for a capacity building for JI members in war,” Ahmad said in Jakarta, Monday, July 25.
One of the suspects arrested in Aceh, ES, made his house as a weapons training facility for the Jemaah Islamiyah group in 2018. He also owns a PCP weapon. Another suspect, MH, is known as one of the funding sources of Jamaah Islamiyah.
Meanwhile, the two suspects from Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, RI and MA, were involved in the suicide bombing at Polrestabes Medan in 2019 by JAD Medan members.
Ahdam Ramadhan said that the police and the Densus 88 are still conducting further investigations about the suspects' roles and involvements in North Sumatra and Riau's terrorist networks.
