TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met UK Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Indonesia and ASEAN, Richard Graham MP on Monday, June 13, during British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste Owen John Jenkins's visit to the Defense Ministry Office in Jakarta.
To Prabowo, Graham said that the defense sector has paved way for the governments of the United Kingdom and Indonesia to have closer ties. Indonesia and the UK have held an annual defense dialogue forum called Joint Defense Cooperation Dialogue (JDCD) since 2019.
"Indonesia is a country that can be relied on to maintain security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region," Graham said in a written statement from the Defense Ministry.
The meeting aims at enhancing bilateral cooperation in the defense sector between Indonesia and the United Kingdom. Prabowo said that Indonesia has always considered Britain a close friend and strategic partner in the defense sector since the 1960s.
Monday's event was a follow-up to Prabowo's meetings with UK officials. The Defense Minister had met UK Defense Minister Rt. Hon Ben Wallace MP during his state visit to the UK in 2021.
Prabowo said that there are opportunities for the two countries to increase defense cooperation. "Such as cooperation in defense and education," he said.
