TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The plan to raise the entry fee of Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java to Rp750,000 for local tourists sparked public protests.
Albeit discussions on the new price policy were postponed, tourists must not worry as Indonesia has many other remarkable temples.
Here are five temples in Indonesia that tourists must not miss:
1. Prambanan Temple
Built in the mid-9th century, Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu religious temple in the archipelago. The temple is located in Sleman Regency, yet it is closer to Klaten than Yogyakarta City.
2. Sewu Temple
Located in Klaten, Central Java, Sewu Temple is related to the popular legend of Roro Jonggrang and Bandung Bondowoso. To prove his love to the princess, Bandung Bondowoso was asked to build 1,000 temples in only one night.
Long story short, he only managed to build 999 temples and then cursed Roro Jonggrang to be the 1000th temple. That is why the temple is named Sewu in Javanese, which means a thousand.
3. Ratu Boko Temple
Ratu Boko Temple is located near Prambanan Temple. Tourists can reach the top stair to enjoy stunning sunset and sunrise.
4. Muara Takus Temple
It is not only Java that has beautiful temples. In Riau stands Muara Takus Temple, a legacy of the Sriwijaya Kingdom.
5. Muaro Jambi Temple
Similar to Muara Takus, Muaro Jambi Temple is said to be a relic of the Sriwijaya Kingdom and the Malay Kingdom. It is located in Maro Sebo District, Muaro Jambi Regency with a vast area of about 3981 hectares, making it the largest Hindu-Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia.
