TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo likened his relationship with PDIP Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri to a mother and child who sometimes have different opinions.
"I see Ibu Mega as my own mother. I really, really respect her very much. On a long journey, sometimes there are differences [of opinions] between children and mothers, and yes, it's normal," said the President when inaugurating At-Taufiq Mosque at the PDIP School, Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta today, Wednesday, June 8, 2022.
Above all differences, Jokowi said, "I have great respect for her who has always full of trust that never changes."
The relationship between Jokowi and Megawati was rumored to be deteriorating after the 5th National Working Meeting of Pro Jokowi or Projo volunteer group in Magelang, on May 22. In his speech, Jokowi signaled support for Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo to run in the 2024 Presidential Election.
After that, Megawati was absent from a number of events held by Jokowi, such as the wedding of his sister, Idayati, with the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Anwar Usman. Megawati also did not attend the commemoration event of Pancasila in Ende, East Nusa Tenggara.
To date, Megawati has not yet spoken about which candidate her party will endorse in the 2024 Presidential Election. Other than Ganjar Pranowo, PDIP was said to have the possibility to nominate the House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani as a presidential candidate.
