TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) spokesperson Dedi Prasetyo on Wednesday announced that police and the immigration office had arrested Mitsuhiro Taniguchi (47) who became a fugitive in Japan over allegations of fraud linked to funds for businesses affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The individual was arrested at Kalirejo, Central Lampung, by the Bandar Lampung immigration and Central Lampung police members,” Dedi confirmed on June 8, Antaranews reported.
The fugitive’s whereabouts were detected after Japanese authorities revoked Taniguchi’s passport, which led to his arrest on Tuesday, June 7, just hours before midnight.
Japan authorities are currently investigating Taniguchi over allegations of committing fraud linked to a government subsidy for small businesses affected by the pandemic. Three people were previously named as suspects which include his former wife Rie Taniguchi (45) and two of his two children aged 22 and 21.
Police believe Mitsuhiro ordered the suspects to file a forged request for a tax refund for a subject registered in Japan’s tax office.
