Public Satisfaction with Jokowi Declines due to High Commodity Prices: Survey

27 April 2022 10:38 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA survey conducted on April 14-19, 2022, by pollster Indikator Politik Indonesia showed that public satisfaction with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo continued to drop to 59.9 percent.

“Meanwhile, 30.5 percent [of respondents] are dissatisfied and 8.1 percent [of respondents] are highly dissatisfied, or 38.6 percent in total. There are indeed more [respondents who claimed] satisfied, but the satisfaction trend continues to decline,” said Executive Director of Indikator Politik Indonesia, Burhanuddin Muhtadi, in the webinar on Tuesday, April 26.

Burhanuddin said that in January 2022, the level of public satisfaction with the government reached 75.3 percent. This was the largest record achieved by Jokowi during his term as the President since 2014.

“It was because inflation had not yet occurred at that time, the price of cooking oil was still affordable [for the public]. People at that time were still happy with the government's performance in handling the Delta cases,” he explained.

He reiterated that the public was dissatisfied with Jokowi because of the high price of basic commodities. This was in line with the survey results which stated that 36.6 percent of the public urged the government to stabilize the prices of basic commodities, especially cooking oil and fuel.

However, Burhanuddin predicted that the satisfaction level would increase as the government decided to ban export of cooking oil and the Attorney General's Office arrested four suspects of the cooking oil mafia.

Indikator Politik Indonesia interviewed 1,220 random people from all over Indonesia in this survey. They were over 17 years old, had the right to vote, and were interviewed in person. Burhanuddin claimed the survey had a margin of error of 2.9 percent with a confidence level of 95 percent.
