Jokowi Says Averting Lockdown Helps Economic Progress in 2022

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, in the CNBC Indonesia economic outlook on Tuesday said Indonesia is entering 2022 with an improved foundation which he attributed to the constant economic progress throughout 2020-2021, which he said is thanks to not imposing a lockdown early into the pandemic.

He asserted that averting a lockdown during the early years of the Covid-19 pandemic helped. The former Jakarta governor claims covid transmissions are able to be controlled because of this.

“One of it is because we never imposed a lockdown, as this eases the economic acceleration in 2022,” said the President during the event on March 22. “We are one of the countries in the world that managed to handle the pandemic.”

His claims were recently justified by Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian who announced the result of a Covid-19 serological survey, which found 86.6 percent of Indonesians already developing SARS-Cov-2 antibodies by the end of 2021.

“Based on this finding, we can see that imposing limited restrictions is appropriate for a country as vast as Indonesia,” said Tito Karnavian on March 18, who compared the study to countries that imposed a lockdown.
