TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali will temporarily suspend operations for 24 hours starting at 6 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA) Thursday, March 3, until 6 a.m. WITA Friday, March 4, as the largely Hindu island celebrates Nyepi’s 1944 Saka New Year or the Day of Silence.
“For 24 hours, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport will temporarily be closed on Nyepi, except for emergency or medical evacuation flights,” said the airport operator AP I official Taufan Yudhistira in Badung Regency, Wednesday, March 2.
Despite temporary closure, Taufan said officers will be on standby at the airport to anticipate flight emergencies.
“The officers will be from Angkasa Pura I, AirNav Indonesia of Denpasar Branch, Denpasar Class I KKP, Airport Authority Region IV, and other related parties. This is the same as the temporary closure of airport operations during Nyepi Day years before,” he said.
Taufan added that the Ngurah Rai Airport will be reopened on Friday morning and the first flight is scheduled at around 7 a.m. WITA.
