TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia Institute of Economic and Social Research (LPEM) in a virtual seminar on Friday revealed that women have dominated the growth of new entrepreneurs under the Grab Indonesia banner in two East Indonesian regions: Kupang and Jayapura.

In a presentation delivered by University of Indonesia LPEM Head Riatu Mariatul, 56 percent of the food app merchants are women and 44 percent are men.

“Women dominated the emergence of new businesses, especially in the Grab Kios platform that offers financial services,” said Mariatul on November 19.

This research involved respondents with backgrounds as drivers, merchants, and Grab Indonesia consumers of Grab Indonesia in the two regions. Samples were extracted through qualitative and quantitative methods from primary and secondary data.

The survey aimed at seeing the effects of digital and financial inclusivity on East Indonesian residents. From the total growth of new businesses initiated by women, the majority of them are in the field of food and beverages (31 percent).

These new emerging businesses amount to a total of 500, which is equivalent to 6-7 percent for the entire food businesses in Kupang and Jayapura.
