TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive Director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) Jakarta, Tubagus Soleh Ahmad, criticized the sanction on the company for disposing of paracetamol waste into Jakarta Bay. Soleh argued that the administrative sanction imposed by the city government was not enough.
“The provincial government should conduct a quick study regarding the impact, then decide what the sanctions will be, whether they are fines, restoration, or others,” Tubagus told Tempo on Thursday, November 11.
He also questioned Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria’s claim that no fish were contaminated by the waste. According to Tubagus, the results of the investigation must be published if they were really carried out by the city administration.
“The research should be thorough, whether it has an impact on society and the ecosystem,” Tubagus underlined.
The pharmaceutical company PT MEP was proven guilty of polluting Jakarta Bay by disposing of paracetamol waste and was given an administrative sanction in the form of a warning, announced the city’s Environment Agency Head Asep Kuswanto on November 8.
The agency also asked the company to repair its integrated waste treatment plant (IPLT) and gave it three to four months to make improvements.
