Rizieq Shihab Admits Wrongdoing; Will Pay Health Protocol Fine

2 December 2020 16:31 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader, Rizieq Shihab, in Wednesday’s virtual event, dubbed the ‘dialogue with 100 ulemas’, admitted wrongdoing for the large crowds that gathered in four locations during his past visits.

He also used this opportunity to say that he will accept any outcome for the violation he committed. The Jakarta administration subjected Rizieq to a Rp50 million fine for violating the city’s COVID-19 health protocol.

“We are indeed wrong and for that, we must pay the fine. There is no debate, we will pay that fine,” said Rizieq in the virtual event on December 2.

The FPI leader who just returned from his self-proclaimed exile in Saudi Arabia on November 10 was in hot water after he enticed large crowds of people in Tebet, South Jakarta, Bogor, and Petamburan, Central Jakarta by attending a number of events across these locations.

He apologized for the crowds in Terminal 3 of Soekarno Hatta Airport, Tangerang; in Tebet, South Jakarta; in Petamburan, Central Jakarta, and in Megamendung, Bogor, which caused public unrest.

Rizieq Shihab said that it was beyond his control, and so since then, FPI canceled all events that could potentially attract a large crowd. “Once again, I apologize if the crowds cause public unrest or inconvenience or against the rule.”
