Erick Thohir on Local Talents Abroad and Conquering the International Market

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The State-owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir in the Nusantara Fashion Festival 2020 interview expressed his fondness for Indonesian musicians who have breached the international market, which he says is something that the ministry supports and is proud of. 

“There are many Indonesian musicians gaining popularity in the United States such as Weird Genius, there’s also Rich Brian, and NIKI,” said Erick Thohir on Sunday, August 16.

According to Erick, who is a former boss of one of Italy’s renowned football team Inter Milan, Indonesia’s large population is considered by the international community as a potential market and had always attracted content creators to gain a piece of Indonesia’s market share. 

He gave an example of his experience managing the world-class football team and revealed how Indonesia was considered as a “special segment” to be gained. “This must be prioritized, we have a local market that must synergize and mutually assist each other. Once the local market is strong enough, we’ll devour the international market and not the other way around,” Erick Thohir called. 

On another note, Erick Thohir said the government continues to help restore the tourism industry by focusing on domestic tourists. He claims that 90 percent of domestic tourists had dominated the hotel and air travel transactions prior to the spread of COVID-19.

“We must be able to develop our market, whether it be local tourists or aligning ourselves locally by purchasing local products,” he concluded.
