Police Chief: Spreading Hate Speech can Alter One's Mind

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police Chief Idham Azis on Wednesday said that contents that contain hate speech, lies, and other negative information can eventually alter how someone thinks if it is constantly spread in social media.
The police chief hopes that members of the public can be wiser in determining contents that are worth sharing or not.
“Convey information correctly and responsibly that is ethical and abides by current norms,” said Idham Azis in a written statement on Wednesday, June 10.
He then reminded people of the consequences of spreading negative content overseen by the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE) that covers issues such as defamation, the offensive against SARA (ethnicity, religion, and race), and electronic trade.
“There are many cases where people are not wise in using social media that eventually were incriminated under UU ITE,” said the police chief. “Don’t let anyone else be harmed again.”
