TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo said on Wednesday that President Jokowi had already requested the help from the Indonesian armed forces (TNI) to guard that distribution of shallots, which is currently a hot commodity.
“The president asserted the use of TNI to facilitate the even distribution of [the shallots],” said Syahrul in a teleconference today, May 13.
According to the Minister, the soaring prices of shallots sold in the market is attributed to the lack of supply but is mainly driven by the uneven national distribution. However, he announced there is still supply this month up to 78,700 tons until the harvest season in June.
“We really have to distribute this evenly,” said Syahrul.
As of Tuesday, May 12, the average national value of mid-sized shallots is sold for Rp51,950 per kilogram, which is Rp300 higher than what it was closed yesterday. The prices have now dropped to Rp 50,000 per kilogram.
Prices of the commodity were on the rise in May up to 6.35 percent with the most expensive being sold in Sorong City, Papua, that saw a record-high price of Rp92,500 per kilogram.
