Police: Not Using Masks Most Common Offense in Jakarta PSBB

20 April 2020 13:39 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Not using face masks has been recorded to be the most common offense during the implementation of the Large Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy in Jakarta.

"The total number of offenders not wearing masks when driving from April 13 to 19, 2020, was 11,240 people," said Director of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic unit, Senior Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo when contacted on Monday, April 20, 2020.

Not using masks is the most common type of offense by a significant margin as the second most common type of offense is driving with a number of passengers above 50 percent of the vehicle capacity with 3,357 violations recorded.

Furthermore, not wearing gloves and riding a motorcycle but not addressed to the same location are also types of offenses with more than 1,000 violations recorded.

On the other hand, the type of offense with the least number of violations are public vehicles that operate past the operating hours limit, with only 87.

"The total number of PSBB violations to date is 18,958 people," Sambodo added.

The police have only penalized violators with warning letters, thus far. In addition, violators have their identity recorded, in order to ensure that the violator will not repeat the same type of violation in the future.

If Jakarta residents are found to be violating the PSBB, they may be subject to legal action by Article 93 of Law Number 6 of 2018 concerning Quarantines, with a possible penalty of one year incarceration and a maximum fine of Rp100 million.
