TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Jokowi has yet again reasserted the importance and urgency to pass the omnibus law during the Constitutional Court (MK) annual plenary in Jakarta today. He argues Indonesia’s laws are marred by “regulatory obesity” and desperately needs to be simplified.
The President claims regulatory simplification would be a solution to quickly progress the country forward in an effective and dynamic manner.
“We are experiencing regulatory obesity. We have made too many sub-laws, lacked consistency, and is too rigid that it ended up hampering us from taking steps,” said Jokowi.
He admits that the concept of introducing an omnibus law is not yet popular in Indonesia despite being a common event in the United States law. “This is a reformation of regulation.”
The government is currently completing two omnibus laws in taxation and job creations. It is also eyeing to fix the constitution by slashing a number of regulations.
Present in the annual MK plenary were Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, Minister Yasonna Laoly, Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.
