Customs Foil Harley Davidson Smuggle Attempt Onboard Garuda

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Soekarno-Hatta Airport customs personnel confiscated a complete Harley Davidson motorcycle smuggled inside a Garuda Indonesia flight that landed on Sunday, November 17.
According to a Tempo source inside the Ministry of Finance, the motorcycle which was not declared in its manifest was disassembled into smaller separate parts onboard the Airbus A330-900 Neo.
“[The manifest] stated zero cargo. But it was found out by customs when it was taken out silently. We then nabbed them,” said the source.
Vice President Corporate Secretary Garuda Indonesia Ikhsan Rosan refused to provide any statement regarding the cargo load on one of the state-owned air-carrier. Rosan only asserts that every item will be declared on arrival despite going through Garuda’s Maintenance Facility (GMF).
“The GMF is a belted area with every possible element present such as customs, immigration, Every item are treated equally and it is not an exclusive area,” said Ikhsan Rosan.
It is important to note that the items intercepted by customs are in front of the import warehouse, which involves breaking into a GMF-owned truck on November 17. At the time, it was reported that 15 bags were filled with motorcycle parts and were about to be smuggled through the ocean gate of custom’s GMF.
Soekarno-Hatta’s Head of customs, Finari Manan assured that the smuggling-attempt of the Harley Davidson motorcycle will be processed under existing policies. “We do not view whether it is backed by a state official or not. Every one is processed the same,” said Finari.
