Anies Baswedan to Issue Circular Banning Lead-based Paint

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan planned to issue a circular letter prohibiting the use of lead-based paint for children’s playgrounds in the capital. Findings on lead contamination at Taman Maju Bersama or Move Forward Together Park (TMB) and Child-Friendly Integrated Public Spaces (RPTRA) were revealed by the Nexus3 Foundation.
“I will check it first,” said Anies when met at Monas Complex, Monday, October 28.
Anies reiterated that he had instructed related agencies to follow up the findings on the poisonous materials on playground’s painted equipment at several parks across the city.
Last week, Nexus3 Foundation released its study results on lead exposure with a high-level concentration in 32 Jakarta parks and playgrounds. The toxic metal poses a serious risk for children as it can disrupt the function of organs and inhibit the child’s development.
Anies said that his administration would be extra mindful of using paint for children’s play equipment at parks. “We must be more careful,” he underlined.
When asked about the playground painted equipment indicated to contain lead, Anies Baswedan balked at commenting on whether it would be repainted or not. He handed over the matter to related agencies.
