"Regarding Palapa Ring, it will finish this year. The land of Papua will be equipped with 4G [network]," Jokowi said Tuesday, September 10.

Earlier in the meeting, 61 figures of Papua and West Papua mentioned nine demands, namely the acceleration of Eastern Palapa Ring project, the provincial division of Papua and West Papua, the formation of national agency for land affairs, recruitment of Papuans as echelon I and II at the ministries, the construction of dormitory for Papuan students across the country.

They also asked for an amendment of law on special autonomy to be listed in the 2020 national legislation program, issuance of presidential instruction for the promotion of temporary workers as civil servants, as well as inauguration of customary institutions and construction of state palace in the region.

Palapa Ring is a telecommunication infrastructure project in the form of optical fiber across Indonesia along 36,000 kilometers. The network will become the focus of telecommunication organizers and users in the country.

Through the project, Jokowi targets the acceleration of growth and social economy development through the huge telecommunication network. The Palapa Ring Project is expected to guarantee the quality of internet connection and communication to be high in quality, secure, and affordable.
