Jokowi Pledges to Build State Palace in Papua Next Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that he will build a Presidential Palace in Papua in 2020. The President has made the vow in response to Papuan figures’ request which is directly conveyed to him in Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday, September 10.
“A palace will be built starting next year,” said the President followed by cheering applause from 61 Papuan and West Papuan figures.
Earlier, the Papuan group leader Abisai Rolio submitted several requests to the president, including a state palace in Jayapura.
Abisai said he will donate 10 hectares of land for the construction project. “I will grant 10-hectare land for the building of state palace so the President can work there, rather than merely visit," he added.
Widodo asked Abisai for confirmation about the land donation. “Really? 10 hectares for free? Is the land ready? So today it has been given de facto?” he asked repeatedly.
Abisai expressed his determination. Jokowi then talked in private with State Secretary Minister Pratikno before announcing the state palace project in Papua.
“I have to discuss it first so it will not be a wrong move. Whether there is funding or not,” said the President followed by the guests' laughing.
