Cirebon Regent Sunjaya Axed 15 Minutes after Inauguration

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Defendant for an illegal job promotion case Sunjaya Purwadisastra was inaugurated as 2019-2024 Cirebon Regent by West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil at Gedung Sate in Bandung today, May 17. However, he was immediately discharged from his position just 15 minutes after his inauguration.
Sunjaya’s inauguration as Regent was initially supposed to be held right after the previous term ended on Tuesday, March 19. But a Home Affairs Minister’s circular letter decided to delay it after the 2019 Indonesia Election was held for security reasons.
According to Ridwan Kamil, Sunjaya’s inauguration must be done to adhere to Law No.10/2016 Article 164(7), stating that the legal status of a candidate for Regent or Mayor must be named prior to their inauguration in office.
“Based on the terms and mandate as mentioned, today we have inaugurated the Cirebon Regent and Deputy Regent for the 2019-2024 term,” said Ridwan Kamil.
