TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said he would consult with the House of Representatives (DPR) members in light of the planned relocation of Indonesia’s capital city to outside Java Island.
“We will consult it to DPR members and national, political, and public figures,” said Jokowi in PT KMK Global Sports I, Cikupa, Tangerang, Banten, Tuesday, April 30.
The President said dialogue with DPR is necessary since the plan is related to the country's future visions in developing a representative capital of the government. He also expected to establish Indonesia-centric development that represents fairness and supports development acceleration, particularly in the country’s eastern area.
Besides, the former Solo Mayor added, a legal umbrella is needed to actuate the capital city relocation. So the plan requires a study on aspects of legal, social, and politics. ‘If the study is mature enough, then it’ll be decided. But this must be consulted with DPR,” he remarked.

Before deciding to move the capital to outside Java Island, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) was first presented three alternatives. The first was to keep the capital in Jakarta but create a special government district that was centered in the area of State Palace, National Monument (Monas), and the vicinity.
The second option was to move the center of government to a region adjacent to Jakarta, such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. However, both alternatives would only strengthen Jakarta as the center of government and business in Indonesia.
Therefore, Jokowi opted to take the third alternative that was to move the capital city to outside Java. This plan was modeled after Brazil that relocated its capital to Brasilia that was far in Amazon; and Australia with its capital Canberra that was situated between Sydney and Melbourne; and a few other countries.
