TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said that the enforcement of TAP MPRS No. 26 of 1966 on the ban to adopt communism must also respect press freedom and academic freedom.
Therefore, he said that President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo told security apparatus not to overeact, for example by raiding or sweeping communist books.
"Our country is a democratic country,” Pramono said on Friday (14/5).
According to him, directions from the President to Chie of the National Police and Commander of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) is already clear and they understand their duties and authority.
Pramono added that things that are related to law enforcement must be respect but the development in the society must not be responded with overreaction as well.
In the meantime, Chief of the National Police General Badrodi Haiti said that so far, measures taken by the apparatus so far is still under control.
According to him, the police understand limits of what they must and must not do and will not any confidential activities.
Nevertheless, he said that if on the ground the police find things that are against TAP MPRS Number 26 of 1966, police would take action.
"As for the sweeping, we won’t do that and we have emphasized that,” Badrodin added.
As for the sweeping of books that contain communism, he said that the police might not confiscate the books from bookstores, campuses or printing offices.
