TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- President Joko Widodo through his Communication Team member Ari Dwipayana said the government has a commitment in reducing carbon emission, especially after the recent forest fires in Sumatera and Kalimantan.
“President said that Indonesia has abundant forest resources with the third largest forest area in the world,” said Ari on Thursday, November 26. “Ironically, we are the sixth largest contributor to carbon emissions in the world. This is not an achievement, but a warning.”
Ari said Jokowi was attending Indonesian Tree Planting Day or Hari Menanam Pohon Indonesia (HMPI) and National Tree Planting Month (BMN) as well as Hari Cinta Puspa and Love Flora and Fauna National Day (HCPSN) at Sultan Adam Public Forest Park in Kalimantan.
In that event, according to Ari, Jokowi committed to reduce carbon emissions by 29 percent in 2030. Jokowi also asked all countries with more advanced industrial sector to commit to reducing carbon emissions.
“We also also asked industrialized countries and developing countries to have the same commitment,” said Ari, imitating President Joko Widodo’s statement.
