TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Jasa Marga President Director Adityawarman projected that traffic in Jakarta would more congested and could not be addressed despite efforts to build more toll roads in the city.
Adityawarman told Tempo on Friday, March 27, 2015, that new toll road projects would not be able to keep up with the automobiles population growth. Theoretically, Adityawarman added, that toll roads in the Capital could only accommodate 150,000 units, while the fact that there are about 500,000 units of cars passing through the toll roads each day.
According to Adityawarman, the completion of Cikampek-Palimanan toll road project could add more traffic. The toll road can reduce the travel time to the North Coast Highway from five hours to 1.5 hours with an average speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
In addition, salary raises for Jakarta civil servants would also contribute to the congested traffic.
“More people will buy cars,” he said.
Adityawarman suggested that the government must be encouraged to build new transportation modes to replace private vehicles, since new toll road constructions would not be enough to address traffic issues. Therefore, Adityawarman pledged supports for the Jakarta administration to set mass rapid trasit and low rapid transit projects in motion.
Adityawarman added that Jasa Marga will accelerate new toll road projects mandated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to the Public Works Ministry.
