TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More tourists visited Yogyakarta on the weekends after Christmas, Saturday, December 28. Cars and vehicles from outside the region packed the Malioboro road and other corresponding roads causing traffic jams.
This weekend, long queue of vehicles reached the outer ring road of Malioboro, which are Jl. Kapten Piere Tendean, Wirobajan crossroad, up to Jl. Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan which is leading to the zero kilometer point.
The illegal parking on the hard shoulders contributed to the congestion. The Police officers from the Yogyakarta Police station have tried to drive away the illegal parking gangsters. In Malioboro, the traffic was diverted to the smaller roads such as Jl. Perwakilan and Jl. Suryaatmaja because the parking spaces had been full since the afternoon.
On the other hand, the traffic jam has brought benefit for the andong (horse carriage) drivers. Wagiman, one of the andong driver said that he could earn Rp75,000 to Rp85,000 each route during the holiday season compared to Rp60,000 in normal days.
