TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President-elect Prabowo Subianto's spokesperson, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, spoke about Prabowo's desire to have regular meetings with former Indonesian presidents. According to Dahnil, these meetings could later be called “presidential club”.
"Essentially, Mr. Prabowo wants former presidents to meet regularly and discuss national strategic issues," said Dahnil on Friday, May 3, 2024. Through these meetings, said Dahnil, Prabowo wants to set an example and maintain relations.
Dahnil said all former presidents of Indonesia are invited to join the club. Currently, Indonesia has two living former presidents. They are the 5th President Megawati Soekarnoputri and the 6th President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). Current president Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, is set to be replaced by Prabowo on October 20, 2024.
Dahnil claimed that Prabowo wished for the current and past Indonesian leaders to be united and harmonious. "Together they work for the interests of the people, regardless of differences in political views and political attitudes," said the spokesperson for the Minister of Defense.
Even so, Dahnil said the presidential club is not an institution. "Presidential club is just a term I use," said Dahnil.
It is known that during the 2024 presidential election, Prabowo was close to Jokowi and SBY. Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, is Prabowo's vice president
Meanwhile, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, SBY's son, is the General Chair of the Democratic Party and a member of the Onward Indonesia Coalition. Prabowo has also met with Jokowi and SBY on several occasions.
Only Megawati has not met Prabowo since the 2024 presidential election was concluded. However, Dahnil claims that a meeting between the two will happen soon. "God willing, in time, Mr. Prabowo will definitely meet Mrs. Megawati," said Dahnil.
