TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Mosques have a strategic role as a place of worship that gave birth to Islamic civilization. Historic mosques with distinctive and magnificent forms are found in various parts of the world as a wealth of Islamic history. Mosques with classical and modern architecture or a combi nation of both are also increasingly easy to find in various countries. Below is a list of the 10 largest mosques in the world. 

List of the Largest Mosques in the World

Citing the UAE Moments page, here are the 10 largest mosques in the world based on area and congregation capacity:

1. Al-Haram Mosque

Masjidil Haram or Masjid Al-Haram is located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The mosque, which was first mentioned in 638 CE, has an area of about 357,000 square meters. The main mosque for Muslims can accommodate around 1-2 million people.

2. Nabawi Mosque

The second most important mosque for Muslims is located in Medina, known as the Prophet's Mosque, or Nabawi Mosque. The mosque is generally believed to have been built in 622 CE, and the Prophet Muhammad himself was involved. The 400,000-square-meter mosque can accommodate 600,000 worshipers to 1 million people during the pilgrimage.

3. Faisal Mosque

Faisal Mosque is located in Islamabad, Pakistan. The mosque, whose construction was financed by the Government of Saudi Arabia, has a design similar to the tents of Bedouin nomads. Faisal Mosque with an area of about 5,000 square meters can accommodate 300,000 worshipers.

4. Istiqlal Mosque

As a country with one of the largest Muslim populations, Indonesia has the 10-hectare Istiqlal Mosque. The mosque, located in Central Jakarta, was built in 1961 during President Sukarno's era. Istiqlal Mosque is reportedly able to accommodate 120,000 worshipers.

5. Hassan II Mosque

The next largest mosque in the world is the Hassan II Mosque located in Casablanca City, Morocco. With an area of about 9 hectares, this mosque can accommodate 105,000 worshipers. Besides being spacious, the mosque, which cost US$ 800 million to build, offers views of the Atlantic Ocean from its large glass hall.
