TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG released an early warning for tidal flooding potential in parts of Indonesia. Tidal flooding will affect those who live in coastal areas.
The head of the maritime meteorology center Eko Prasetyo stated that the tidal flooding will be triggered by the new moon phenomenon on January 11, 2024. This phenomenon could increase the maximum height of the tide.
"Based on the water level observation and tide prediction, the tidal flooding will potentially hit several coastal areas in Indonesia," Eko said on Thursday, Jan. 11.
However, Eko also said the tidal flooding will not occur simultaneously. According to data, the flood will happen gradually until January 19.
In general, tidal flooding will affect coastal communities and the loading and unloading activities at ports. "Activities of coastal communities such as shrimp farming and fisheries. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and alert to anticipate the effect of maximum tide," Eko said.
Several regions to potentially be hit with tidal flooding in Indonesia are coastal areas of North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Lampung, Riau Islands, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, NTT, North Sulawesi, North Maluku and Papua.
