TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate number 3, Ganjar Pranowo, stated that downstream batteries may advance the South-South cooperation during the third presidential debate on Sunday.
"We have a great potential for the South-South [cooperation, we have amazing natural resources, for example, the batteries," he said.
The South-South term is a historic term used by academics and regulation makers to describe the exchange of resources, technology, and knowledge between developing countries, or the global south.
Ganjar believes that Indonesia has the potential for downstream batteries since Indonesia is one of the biggest nickel producers in the world.
"With the South-South cooperation, we'll have the nickel, but we can share the bauxite with other countries. Or lithium, for example, [we can share] with Argentina," he said.
According to Ganjar, Indonesia could gain significant power for the national economy if successful in pushing for downstream batteries. Then, as a result, job opportunities will come in abundance for Indonesian citizens.
"We will seize them with top-notch human resources, which will benefit the working class since it opens up more job opportunities," he claimed.
The presidential debate this time was held on Sunday evening, Jan. 7, 2024, at Istora Senayan, Gelora Bung Karno, Central Jakarta. The third debate brought the themes of defense, security, international relations, globalization, geopolitics, and foreign politics.
