Education Ministry Talks of Drop in Indonesia's PISA 2022 Score

8 December 2023 15:09 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology stressed that the country's Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) score in 2022, which dropped by 12 to 13 points, did not reflect the current quality of education.

“The PISA 2022 results are not a reflection of current education but they were two years ago when we closed schools [due to the COVID-19 pandemic],” said the ministry’s head of educational standards, curriculum, and assessment unit (BSKAP), Anindito Aditomo, at a media gathering in Jakarta, Thursday, December 7.

Anindito attributed the closure of schools for almost 24 months during the pandemic to the decline in the PISA 2022 score, which resulted in learning loss.

He explained that the PISA survey was conducted right after the pandemic ended around May to June 2022, so the results could not reflect the country’s current education.

Furthermore, Anindito mentioned that the National Assessment (AN) 2023, which will be released early next year, would be a more appropriate measure of the current quality of Indonesian education.

PISA 2018 involved at least 79 nations, whereas PISA 2022 involved 81 countries, including 37 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and 44 partner countries.

PISA measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics, and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. The sample was randomly selected by the OECD in each country, including disadvantaged regions.

In comparison to the PISA 2018 report, Indonesia's PISA 2022 report revealed a reduction in the reading score from 371 to 359, mathematics from 379 to 366, and science from 396 to 383.

On the other hand, Indonesia ranked 71st in reading, 70th in mathematics, and 67th in science out of 81 countries and territories assessed. These rankings improved on the previous PISA 2018 rankings of 74th in reading, 73rd in maths, and 71st in science.
