Stopping War in Gaza, OIC Gives Mandate to Indonesia and 6 Other Countries

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is one of the countries mandated by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to initiate action on behalf of the OIC and the Arab League to stop the war in Gaza.

Apart from Indonesia, the OIC leaders through a resolution agreed upon after the extraordinary summit in Riyadh on Saturday, November 11 2023, also gave a mandate to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and Nigeria to help start a political process to achieve peace between Israel and Palestine.

"Paragraph 11 (in the resolution) is an acknowledgment from the OIC of Indonesia's activeness or active contribution which continues to try to resolve the Palestinian problem, especially recently the situation in Gaza," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, in a written statement released after attending the OIC Summit.

According to Retno, the resolution contains 31 OIC messages with a strong and harsh tone for ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza.

Apart from condemning Israel's atrocities in Gaza, OIC leaders, including President Jokowi, also urged the UN Security Council to act to produce a resolution so that atrocities can end immediately, aid can come in, and the importance of complying with international law.

The OIC also condemns the forced transfer of 1.5 million Palestinians from north to south Gaza, which according to the 4th Geneva Convention is a war crime.

"The OIC also urges the UN Security Council to issue a resolution to condemn Israel's destruction of hospitals in Gaza," said Retno.

The OIC Extraordinary Summit on the situation in Gaza was held at the same time as the Arab League Summit.

The summit is considered very important to show the solidarity of the OIC countries and to find additional efforts so that Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian people can be stopped immediately.
