TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Solidarity for Palestinians organization held a protest in front of the US Embassy today. The peace protestors also distribute watermelons to be eaten together.

"This is part of our resistance against Israel as well as a support toward Palestine," said Bolby, a representative from the Humanist Foundation, to Tempo on Thursday.

Bolby explained that raising the Palestinian flag, especially in Gaza, is forbidden by Israel. Thus, watermelon became a symbol of resistance. "Watermelons have the same color combination as the Palestinian flag," Bolby said.

The watermelons were pre-packaged and distributed to every person who attended the protest. In between eating the watermelons, an orator spoke up about the meaning of watermelon for their cause.

"Eating watermelons is a political act," the orator said.

The solidarity action for Palestine today highlighted the US support for Israel and its negligence toward the violation of human rights in Gaza. The protestors demanded that the US push for a ceasefire and take an active role in ending the decades-long conflict.
